The king Ferdinando II of Borbone, sovereign of the
Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, because of the addiction of his kingdom from the foreign
industry, he wanted to start a process of industrialization and the development of the
strong roads it was one of it of the most remarkable aspects. Really here, in the South,
the first railway line was built in Italy, her Naples-Nocera-Castellammare whose first
line (Naples-porticos) was inaugurated the October 3 1839. The locomotive, called " Vesuviana ", Naples was climbed on to with built pieces and projected in England on the prototype of the Rocket and it was able of to reach the speed of 60 Km/hs. The November 6 1840, Ferdinando II emanated a decree for the acquisition of a ground set to the border between Naples and Porticos on which to install a new Workshop. The place, anciently said Leucopetra, after the 1631 Vesuvius eruption Pietrarsa had been denominated. The first seven locomotives built to Pietrarsa with material inglesi had called: Pietrarsa, Crows, Robertson, Vesuvius, Maria Teresa, Etna, Partenope. In 1845 the czar Nicola I of Russia on I invite of Ferdinando II it visited the shops remaining, very stricken so much to be ordered to notice the plant of the establishment to reproduce it in the industrial air of Kronstadt. The workshop of Pietrarsa was also visited by Pious Pope IX. The grandeur of the Buildings of the Museum notices in spectacular way in the tent of the models, once department torneria. In the Tent you model, in fact, they are preserved plastic static and in movement among which, very meaningful, that realized by the Bettinart that it illustrates the ancient system to third rail of the Milano-Varese-Porto Ceresio. In 1853 the Real Workshop of Mechanic and Pirotecnico of Pietrarsa it was by now complete in all of his departments of workmanship and in full efficiency, so much to be become the first industrial nucleus of the peninsula. In that years in the establishment over that jobs for the railroads, works were performed pyrotechnics for the war, cars and tools for harbors, yards and arsenals, vapor cars for the Marina of the Kingdom and also, works of notable artistic merit as statues and busts. Two fused candelabra to Pietrarsa, they still illuminate the principal staircase of the royal Building in Naples. In the Tent " locomotives " ex department assemblage, finds 24 vapor locomotives and four locomotives trifase that offers an ample panorama on the evolution of the tradition on rotaia. In 1860, with the fall of the Kingdom Borbonico and with the unity of Italy, Pietrarsa passed in management to the Italian government. The workshop was in relief from the firm Draft. The firm Draft reduced the maestranzes and lengthened the schedule of thin job to 11 daily hours, it dismissed many workers which announced a strike. Draft frightened got the rescission of the contract, subsequently the management of the workshop passed to the National society of Mechanical Industries, which combined the production of Pietrarsa with that of the establishment of the Granilis. The first January 1878 the State definite to directly manage the Establishment of Mechanical Industries of Pietrarsa and Granili entrusting the direction of it to the Ing. Passarini. During the management Passarini was built 110 locomotives, 845 wagons, 280 cars and varied boilers. The roadways built to Pietrarsa were used on the whole Italian net. In 1885 with the Railway Conventions, the exercise of the whole national net was given in concession to three societies: the adriatic one, the Mediterranean one and the Sicula. With her management of the Mediterranean Net, Pietrarsa and Granili were restructured and endowed with new means. The shops were destined to the Great " Reparation " and not more to the construction of the material roadway. The Italian State with the law of April 22 1905, assumed the direct exercise of all the railway lines of the national territory and, therefore, also of the two Neapolitan shops. Pietrarsa kept on handling the Great Reparation of the vapor locomotives, while Granili was destined to the reparation of the vehicles and the fusion of throws in ghisa and bronze. In the two establishments you/they were operated by the state interventions of restructuring both for the buildings and for the equipments. Such interventions allowed the shops to operate during the II world conflict the maximum effort of productivity. During the post-war period the diffusion of the diesel and electric locomotives determined the decline of the vapor locomotives and besides also the shops of Pietrarsa set out to rapid decline being destined few vapor to the reparation of the roadways remained in circulation. The December 20 1975, the Offines of Pietrarsa stopped their activity. That day was delivered the last locomotive gone out of the Great " Reparation " the 640.088 to the exercise. The tents of the ex Workshop Borbonicos made available as you space espositivi of great architectural charm for a character national museum on the "civilization of the rail."
